4. THE CREW (Plank Owners)
In a process not unlike the selection of astronauts, the admiral combed the Navy to find an elite initial crew of only a dozen men for his dream boat. One scientist reported running psychological tests to determine the type of people who could work together under such tense and demanding conditions. The emphasis was on brains, not brawn. At the age of twenty-two, I was one of twelve young, but veteran submariners chosen for the job. In addition to navy personnel, three civilian engineers became de facto crew members by working with us in port and at sea.
